🔴 Course description: 

This is a free, 1 hour course which will provide you with basic knowledge about citizen scientists’ rights and obligations in gathering data, analysing data, and co-authoring research papers.


This course is aimed at the citizen scientist or volunteer in a citizen science project, who would like to understand more about their legal rights and obligations.  You will need a basic overview of citizen science, but no in-depth knowledge is required.

In this module, a special emphasis will be put on handling sensitive data (such as medical or personal) and ethical requirements in gathering information.

By the end of this course, you will be able to better understand:

  1. The legal status of the citizen scientist,
  2. The importance of ethics in gathering and analysing scientific data,
  3. The rights and obligations of volunteers in a project.

💡Access information

This course allows 1) guest access (no registration required) and 2) self-enrollment as a user. 

Type of access

Using guest access allows you to see course content freely but does not enable you to save your learning progress or earn a badge. Self-enrollment as a user allows you to see the course content, save your learning progress and earn a badge.

How to access

Guest access: enter the key ‘CitSciLaw’ into option “Guest access” below.

Self-enrollment: To self- enroll first create your account on the citizenscience.eu platform - then on the ECS Academy (it is a two step process). Once you have created your account on the ECS Academy you will be able to enroll without a key.
